NAPHA Members Survey

The oldest of its type

The survey, the oldest of its type, is highly regarded within the amusement park industry and within enthusiasts’ circles.  Many amusement parks feature NAPHA’s survey results prominently in their marketing and advertising materials, as well as on signs in their park.

While exchanging opinions about favorite amusement parks and rides is fun for enthusiasts,” noted NAPHA’s Survey Coordinator, Marlowe McClasky Futrell, “Parks also are interested in the survey findings, and many incorporate the results into their publicity materials.

NAPHA members are typically experienced riders who have visited countless amusement parks and have ridden a diverse assortment of roller coasters and other rides.  The average member has been to more than 120 different amusement parks and has ridden about 315 roller coasters.

2014 Survey Results

KNOEBELS, WALT DISNEY WORLD NAMED TOP AMUSEMENT PARKS

 Lombard, IL – The National Amusement Park Historical Association (NAPHA) released the results of its 29th annual NAPHA Amusement Park and Attractions Survey.  The NAPHA survey is the oldest of its type.

 “Throughout its existence, the NAPHA survey has been highly regarded not only to enthusiasts, but to the industry,” noted NAPHA’s Survey Coordinator, Marlowe McClasky Futrell.  “Over the years, the NAPHA survey has proven to be one of its most effective publicity tools as many parks incorporate the results into their publicity materials.”

 Some of the attractions seizing the top spots in the NAPHA 2014 survey include:

·         Favorite Traditional Amusement Park:  Knoebels Amusement Resort (Elysburg, PA)

·         Favorite Theme Park:  Walt Disney World (Lake Buena Vista, FL)

·         Best Park for Families:  Idlewild & Soak Zone (Ligonier, PA)

·         Most Beautiful Park:  Busch Gardens Williamsburg (Williamsburg, VA) for the 25th consecutive year

·         Favorite Wood Coaster:  Phoenix, Knoebels Amusement Resort

·         Favorite Steel Coaster:  Millennium Force, Cedar Point (Sandusky, OH)

 NAPHA members are experienced riders who have visited countless amusement parks and have ridden a diverse assortment of roller coasters and other rides.  The average member has been to nearly 100 different amusement parks and has ridden about 300 roller coasters.

Two Pennsylvania amusement parks, Knoebels Amusement Resort and Kennywood (West Mifflin, PA) have been neck and neck in the standings since 1996 with each holding one of the top two positions in this category.  This year Knoebels was voted number one, a position it also held in 2013, 2012 and 2010.

 BEST POST-SUMMER PARKS

Cedar Point, Dollywood, Kennywood and Knoebels Amusement Resort were cited by numerous NAPHA members as the Best Post-Summer Parks.  After the traditional season, Cedar Point celebrates HalloWeekends, Dollywood holds a Smokey Mountain Christmas, Kennywood hosts both Phantom Fright Nights and Holiday Lights, while Knoebels celebrates Halloween with Hallo-Fun.

Lombard, IL – The results of the 25th annual NAPHA Amusement Park and Attractions Survey have been released by the National Amusement Park Historical Association (NAPHA).

 

The members of NAPHA named Knoebels Amusement Resort (Elysburg, PA) as their Favorite Traditional Amusement Park, while Walt Disney World (Lake Buena Vista, FL) was their Favorite Theme ParkIdlewild (Ligonier, PA) topped the list as the Best Park for Families, while Busch Gardens Williamsburg was cited as the Most Beautiful Park for its twenty-first consecutive year.

 

Celebrating its Silver Anniversary, the NAPHA survey is the oldest of its type.  “Over the past twenty-five years, the survey has been highly regarded not only to enthusiasts, but to the industry.  Many parks feature the results prominently in their marketing and advertising materials,” noted NAPHA’s Survey Coordinator, Marlowe McClasky Futrell.

For the fourth consecutive year, Voyage (Holiday World) nabbed (or tied for) the top spot  as Favorite Wood Roller Coaster.  Phoenix (Knoebels Amusement Resort), now at number two, has held one of the first two positions since 2004.  Members named Boulder Dash (Lake Compounce) as their third favorite wooden coaster reappearing on the list for the first time since 2004.

The results of the Favorite Steel Roller Coaster category remain unchanged from 2009. Millennium Force (Cedar Point) nabbed the top spot for the ninth consecutive year.  Magnum (Cedar Point) was second, followed by Phantom’s Revenge (Kennywood).

BEST NEW ATTRACTIONS

Two rides were named by NAPHA members as the Best New Attractions for 2010 – the Wizarding World of Harry Potter (Islands of Adventure, Orlando, FL) and Kennywood’s Sky Rocket.  In 2009, the honors went to Diamondback (Kings Island, Kings Island, OH), Manta (Sea World Orlando), and Prowler (Worlds of Fun & Oceans of Fun, Kansas City, MO).  Other past winners include Ravine Flyer II (Waldameer & Water World, Erie, PA), Maverick (Cedar Point) (2007), Mystery Mine (Dollywood, Pigeon Forge, TN) (2007), Renegade (Valleyfair!, Shakepee, MN) (2007), Voyage (Holiday World) (2006), and Hades (Mt. Olympus Water and Theme Park, Wisconsin Dells, WI) (2005).
